Write a Letter to Congress: Last November, despite our efforts, Congress passed the Peru Free Trade Agreement. With the recent uprising of farmers in Peru we are seeing the harsh consequences of that misguided action. Through our hard work, however, we did succeed in ensuring that the majority of Democrats in the House voted against it, including four Texas Democrats. The only reason they did so was because of your letters and phone calls. Right now there are three more harmful trade agreements that we want to make sure Congress does not pass. These are bilateral agreements with Panama, Colombia, and South Korea. Panama: Check out this Citizens Trade Campaign statement to find out why we must urge our Congress Members to oppose this Panama free trade agreement. Colombia: The Texas Fair Trade Coalition is working hard to defeat the Colombia FTA. Since the early 1980's over 4,000 union leaders in Colombia have been murdered by right-wing paramilitary groups -- only 376 of these murders have even been investigated by the government, and of those only 5 people were convicted of a crime. In 2006 alone, 72 union leaders were murdered. And yet even with this horrendous labor rights record, the Bush Administration is seeking to pass a free trade agreement with Colombia. Learn more and then please call or write your Congress Member to urge them to speak out in opposition to the Colombia FTA. South Korea: A free trade agreement with South Korea would threaten thousands of American jobs in the auto industry, while hurting small farmers, public health, and the environment in both countries. Make sure your Congress Member has publicly stated his or her opposition to this unfair agreement. It is way past time that the United States stopped agreeing to more NAFTA-style trade agreements that take away jobs, suppress worker rights, destroy the environment, undermine public health, and threaten our democracy.
