The Texas Fair Trade Coalition is constantly working to educate people about fair trade issues and advocate for fair trade policies. We do this in a variety of ways. Below are some of our ongoing projects. LOCAL FAIR TRADE GATHERINGS -- We meet monthly in certain cities to bring together community leaders who want to join forces to fight for fair trade at the local level. We are currently having meetings in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. Contact us if you are interested in participating in these movement-building endeavors. MAKE TEXAS SWEATFREE CAMPAIGN Austin Over the past two years, we have been spearheading a coalition of Austin area organizations that are fighting for a sweatfree community. In June of 2007, we succeeded in getting the city of Austin to pass a SweatFree Ordinance. It was unanimously approved by the City Council! On January 29, we got the Travis County Commissioners Court to unanimously endorse a SweatFree Resolution. Now we are making sure that both of these initiatives are implemented properly, and we will be asking both the county and the city to join the State and Local Government SweatFree Consortium. To find out more information about this initiative and how you can get involved, click here. San Antonio A coalition of San Antonio area organizations are currently planning a campaign to get the city of San Antonio to pass a sweatfree ordinance. If you or your organization would like to get involved or endorse this effort, please call Courtney at 210-396-6047 or the Texas Fair Trade Coalition at 469-835-6211. Visit www.sweatfreesanantonio.org for more information. Dallas This past May 29th, a number of organizations and concerned citizens came together to launch a campaign to get the city of Dallas to pass a sweatfree ordinance. To get involved, e-mail SweatFreeDallas (at) gmail.com. GLOBALIZATION/TRADE WORKSHOPS AND FILM SHOWINGS -- Since our founding in 2002, the Texas Fair Trade Coalition has done hundreds of workshops, presentations, and film showings to educate people about fair trade issues. Let us know if you are interested in hosting such an event at your organization. INTERNSHIPS -- We welcome students and others interested in doing unpaid internships. There are many opportunities to contribute to our work, including doing independent research on trade-related issues, writing fact sheets, doing workshops, supporting our local gatherings, and advancing our SweatFree Campaign. We are open to internships done through universities across the state. To find out more information about any of the above projects, please contact Marc at marc (at) texasfairtrade.org. |
