![]() On May 29th, 2008, organizations and concerned citizens from across the Dallas area came together to begin a campaign to make Dallas sweatfree. Initially, we will be calling for the city of Dallas to pass a "sweatfree" ordinance, which would require the city to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to buy police uniforms, firefighter uniforms and other city-purchased garments and textiles made in sweatshops. We will ask the city to require companies that contract with the city to disclose the locations and contact information for all work sites and to sign a code of conduct commiting themselves and their subcontractors to treating workers according to U.S. and international labor standards. We will also ask the city to work with an independent monitoring agency, the State and Local Government SweatFree Consortium, to ensure that the companies are abiding by their commitments. To learn more about this effort and the national anti-sweatshop movement, visit www.sweatfree.org. Also check out the sweatfree ordinance passed by the city of Austin in 2007.
